Our Design and Technology curriculum aims to provide an inclusive, engaging, and supportive environment where all students, particularly those with Social, Emotional, and Mental Health (SEMH) needs, can thrive.
In line with the National Curriculum, we focus on developing creativity, practical skills, and problem-solving abilities through hands-on projects that connect learning to real-world contexts.
The projects within the curriculum:
- Promote emotional well-being and resilience through structured, achievable tasks that reduce anxiety and build confidence.
- Encourage engagement and motivation by offering practical, tactile experiences that allow students to see tangible results and celebrate success.
- Develop social skills and teamwork through collaborative projects that foster positive peer interactions and communication.
- Provide clear routines and scaffolding to support focus and self-regulation, ensuring students feel safe and secure in the workshop environment.
- Embed transferable skills such as planning, evaluating, and making informed material choices, preparing students for future learning and life beyond school.
- Link theory to practice by teaching material properties, sustainability, and technical principles in a way that is accessible and relevant, supporting progression to more complex projects.
Our curriculum ensures that SEMH students experience success through creative freedom within structured frameworks, helping them develop confidence, independence, and a sense of achievement while meeting the statutory requirements of the National Curriculum.
